FLESH AND THE DEVIL
John Gilbert and Greta Garbo shine in this wonderful feature by Clarence Brown. Their much documented off-screen infatuation seeps into the performances, making this film a highly charged romantic tragedy, focused on the themes of friendship, betrayal and deceit – astonishingly forward for its time, it managed nevertheless to elude the censors. Carl Davis’ score reflects the late-romantic period in which the film was set, as well as enhancing Garbo’s elusive and timeless aura.
