Lubitsch’s version of the famous play and operetta boasts deeply moving performances from Novarro, Shearer and Hersholt, and much romance amid the beer-drinking. Although he stages the story on a typically lavish MGM scale, Lubitsch never loses sight of the real human emotions that lie behind the pomp and pagaentry, which he paints in his own inimitable way. This excellent print has two tinted sequences.
