A far cry from Griffith’s earlier epics, this production – adapted from LIMEHOUSE NIGHTS by Thomas Burke – is an intimate ‘art’ film. But like the epics, it too broke new ground. Conceived as visual poetry, shot entirely in the artificial setting of a studio, the tragic story, is a plea for tolerance. Introducing soft focus to the cinema – through the lens of Henrik Sartov - it is infused with passages of great beauty.
